Puketapu

South-east of Palmerston
Palmerston, Otago
This prominent volcanic cone, represents the slave-girl Puketapu from the wrecked ancient canoe, Araiteuru, sent to get fire-wood by her shipmates and turned to stone for failing to return before dawn.

The memorial to Sir John McKenzie on the cone dates from 1932. He was the local member of Parliament and Minister of Lands and Agriculture in the Balance and Seddon Liberal Governments.
