New Brighton Pier and Beach

New Brighton Coastal Road
New Brighton, Canterbury
See the Canterbury coast from this splendid reincarnation of the traditional English seaside pier. The first pier was opened in 1894. New Brighton gained popularity as a seaside escape in the late 19th century when trams began running from Christchurch.

The beach is sandy and has good surfing. The New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1910, is the oldest in New Zealand.

There is also the award winning library sitting on the water's edge to visit. It has a collection of pier photographs.

Get to New Brighton from the city on the #5 or #40 bus. Use the Journey Planner for the bus timetable.
