St Christopher's Church and Hall

Forres/Ventnor Street, Seatoun, Wellington
Seatoun, Wellington
A rare and welcome triumph over earthquake strengthening regulations, St Christopher's still stands and stands to be returned to the community after required works bring it up to standard.

This Romanesque Chapel and non-matching hall are on a special and sunny site in the prosperous seaside suburb of Seatoun and have stood as a pair since the 1932, the hall dating to 1913.

The Chapel was designed by William Fielding, who was also designed other Wellington Churches and the Evening Post newspaper building.
It became clear in 2012 that the Chapel could not meet Earthquake regulations, the Presbyterian Church and it's small Seatoun congregation declaring repair costs out of their league.

A concerted local campaign was unable to save the church from going under the hammer early in 2015, though they did put in a tender which was unsuccessful, much to the community's despair. Several months later the new owners were revealed to be film director Peter Jackson, along with his wife Fran Walsh and a business partner. Their business is based in next door suburb Miramar. They plan to save the buildings and lease them back to the Miramar Peninsula Community Trust.

Mr Jackson and Ms Walsh are gaining a reputation for random acts of building rescue, especially churches and theatres.
