William Clayton Building

Molesworth Street
Thorndon, Wellington
The world’s first base isolated building, designed to withstand earthquakes using a lead/rubber bearing as an isolator and energy absorber, In an earthquake the building can move up 150 mm horizontally.

In 2014 Studio Pacific Architecture were given a brief to refurbish and extend the building. Work would start from the ground up with a widening gap around the base isolators from 150 mm to about 00mm to make it even more resilient.

"The building, which was a bit like a tiered wedding cake with smaller floors on the higher levels, would be extended by widening the upper floors, and another two floors would be added on top."
