Arthur's Pass Village

Arthurs Pass village sits right beside the eastern entrance to the Otira rail tunnel. About 40 people live here permanently. It rains a good deal (4 metres a year) but the town is popular as a base for walking or climbing in the impressive landscape of the National Park.

The DOC office will provide you with walk descriptions. Some of the walks such as the Devil's Punch Bowl are relatively easy but if you are venturing further afield and perhaps doing some climbing you should sign ithe Intentions Book and be well prepared and experienced.

Arthur's Pass is a stopping place for the TranzAlpine train and a number of coast to coast buses pass through. There is a guided tour taking the train from Christchurch taking short walks in the Park and returning by road or you can simply use the train as your means of transport.
