Dominion Farmers Institute Building (Former)

Featherston Street and Ballance Street,
Wellington, Wellington
Designed by Collins and Harman, the architects responsible for the neo-Gothic Press Building in Christchurch, this reinforced concrete structure was built by Fletcher Construction for the Dominion Farmer's Institute in 1917. It gave the farming lobby a significant presence in the capital and was intended to include a farmers club and private hotel.

The farming community's view of its importance to the economy is well illustrated by the text of the foundation stone.

At one time the building housed the Reserve Bank.

Some of the building's ornamentation was removed after the 1942 earthquake and it no longer houses the Dominion Farmers Institute but it remains a distinctive feature of the Wellington scene. The atrium has been enclosed and is an impressive sight.
