Moutoa Island

Whanganui River
Te Tuhi Junction, Manawatu
This small island was the site of a ritual battle on the morning of 14 May 1864. It was watched by supporters of the two sides from opposite banks of the river.

Teara.govt.nz tells us: 'The conflict was between the upriver supporters of the anti-European Pai Marire (Hauhau) movement and the lower river peoples. It lasted a mere half an hour, but cost the lives of perhaps 50 Hauhau and 15 lower river Maori, along with one European, lay brother Euloge Reignier from the nearby Catholic mission.'
