New Lynn Town Centre

Totara Avenue
Avondale, Auckland
An on-going regeneration project in New Lynn centred on a new rail/bus interchange is realising the idea of encouraging people to live, work and have recreational opportunities within walking distance of the town centre.

"The urban plan says New Lynn will, by 2030, be a unique sustainable urban place centred on a world class transit interchange capable of attracting and maintaining a population of 20,000 residents and 14,000 workers."

"Phase One of the new heart of New Lynn, the Merchant Quarter (behind Totara Ave and Great North Road), was officially opened by Mayor Len Brown on March 8, 2013.

Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Infratil Infrastructure Property Ltd worked in partnership on the project which involved the development of land opposite the New Lynn transport interchange."

"Architecture and design company Jasmax designed the two buildings fronting Totara Ave and McCrae Way with the company taking inspiration from local sources."

"The triangular precast concrete panels on the medical centre are inspired by the west coast bush and the colours of the panel edges have been matched to Crown Lynn tea saucers. The fins on the carpark building help ventilation and are inspired by the fins on a 1969 Holden Monaro. The weather steel cladding reflects the iron oxide found on west coast beaches."

An eye-catching 10 story tower of low cost-apartments has been added above the Merchant Quarter. As with its podium the design has been inspired by the town's history as the home of Crown Lynn pottery.

In February 2015, the New Lynn makeover received international attention when the installation of a suspended aluminium artwork at the new Railway Station was misinterpreted by many as having phallic traits rather than the intended representation of çlouds and raindrops'

A new library is planned as well as more medium-density housing developments and transport improvements.
