St Joseph's Church, Jerusalem (Hiruharama)

Wanganui River Road, JERUSALEM
Jerusalem, Manawatu
St Joseph's Church built in 1892 has associations with Mother Mary Joseph Aubert and poet James K. Baxter.

A Maori mission was begun here by the Catholic Church in 1883 and in 1892, when this church was built, Sister Mary (Suzanne) Aubert founded the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, New Zealand's first indigenous religious order. A process has been initiated to make Suzanne Aubert a Canonised Saint.

Poet James K Baxter who was a Catholic convert moved to Jerusalem and established a commune, an open community for social drop-outs, here in 1969. He died at the age of 46 and is buried here.

The Old Convent Buiilding is now self-catering accommodation.
