Miranda Shorebird Centre

283 East Coast Rd, RD 1, Pokeno
Kaiaua, Waikato
Thousands of wading birds from the Arctic tundra, along with similar numbers of New Zealand breeding shorebirds are present at Miranda each year. They are attracted by the food found in 8500 hectares of tidal mudflat.

Two short walking tracks from the Shorebird centre,, one to the North (5 mins) and one to the South (30 mins) enable you to go bird-watching. Binoculars are handy.

Shell ridges or cheniers that have formed over thousands of years provide safe roosting areas for the birds at high tide which is the best time to view the birds.

The Firth of Thames is a wetland of International Significance.

The Miranda Shorebird Centre is an information and education centre, and a lodge for accommodation.

Unfortunately it is not possible to reach the Shorebird Centre by public transport.
