Kaitoke Regional Park

Waterworks Road, off SH2 12 km north of Upper Hutt.

One of the most beautiful ares of original native bush near Wellington. A popular place to picnic, camp, walk, or swim in the river.

Try the white water in the Hutt Gorge for rafting, kayaking or tubing. The Gorge trip takes 3-6 hours so be sure to start early on the day. High flows in the river can give rise to Grade 3+ rapids.

Four walks, ranging from 20 minutes return to 6 hours return, begin near the car park at the Pakuratahi-Hutt forks. See the Walkway Map.

The park is the source of much of Wellington's water. Listen to the audioguide.

Dave Cox (echohifi@yahoo.com) comments: this place is the best! If your going to be in Tauranga, or the Mount, you have to check it out!!, you can either swim around the bridge, take a walk up stream or down streem, and have a good look at a major part of what NZ has to offer, it’s a reall gem, honestly, have a good look around, there is something there for every one!

Shotover River and Skippers Canyon - Ford of Bruinen

Skippers Canyon

A great flood engulfs the Black Riders. The Shotover River where this scene was filmed is prone to flash floods, though not the magic variety of the film. In 1863, during the goldrushes in the area, floods swept away miners and their equipment. Queenstown tour companies will take you to Skippers Canyon ( the road is not for the faint-hearted, and is out-of-bounds for rental vehicles). Rafting and jet-boating are popular adventure activities on the Shotover.
